If you are one of the applicants of the just concluded 2011 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Then am afraid to inform you that you are surely one of the over 800,000 applicants who wont be admitted into any of the Nigerian tertiary institutions after-all.
This was revealed by the immediate past Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Peter Okebukola, during an annual May Day lecture organized by the House of Lords, Nigeria.
The former Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University disclosed that such huge number of applicants wont be admitted due to limited enrollment capacities in the universities.
Professor Okebukola who is also the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Osun State University Governing Council, said working on the premise that about 60 per cent of the applicants would be suitably qualified, a large army of the unsuccessful youths would roam the streets at the end of the 2010/2011 admission, despite having 117 universities.
He opined that federal and state governments as well as private university proprietors would need to invest N837 billion in 10 years in the education sector to achieve increased enrollment in the nation's tertiary institutions.
